Long-dormant bitcoins from the shuttered cryptocurrency exchange BTC-e have been moved again after a known BTC-e wallet sent 10,000 bitcoins to two unknown addresses in November 2022, 65 of which ultimately appeared to go to Hit BTC. One of the addresses that received 3,299 bitcoins began moving funds again on March 14, eventually sending small portions to exchanges and OTC trading desks, including KuCoin, MEXC, and an OTC desk called BTC2pm. On-chain data shows that in the two transactions, about 2.75 BTC flowed into KuCoin through multiple intermediate wallets, and 1 BTC flowed into MEXC. Foresight News noted that U.S. law enforcement agencies shut down BTC-e in 2017 and arrested its operator, Alexander Vinnik, at a resort near Thessaloniki, Greece. The U.S. Department of Justice accused him of money laundering and other crimes and is now in custody at Santa Rita Prison in Dublin, California.
