Uniswap DAO has taken a significant step to address low participation, electing seven delegates, including 404 DAO, Wintermute Governance, PGOV, and StableLab, to receive increased voting power.
Delegation Initiative to Counter Participation Challenges
In response to low engagement, Uniswap DAO voted to delegate UNI tokens from the Uniswap Foundation to underrepresented delegates maintaining an 80% participation rate. Originally targeting 2.5 million UNI for four delegates, the proposal evolved to allocate 10M UNI to seven chosen representatives. With 18.5M UNI token holders participating, over 17M voted in favor. The proposal now awaits execution by UNI delegates on-chain.
Signs of Renewed Interest Amid Market Downturn
This move coincides with a general decline in DAO governance activity during the bear market. The positive response to the vote suggests a potential resurgence of interest in the crypto space. Notably, the UNI token has experienced a 23% increase over the past week and a 50% surge over the month.
COO of StableLab Optimistic About Outcome
Doo Wan Nam, COO of StableLab, expressed positivity about the election outcome, highlighting the broader support for the vote, even from larger delegates not directly benefiting. In DAOs, such widespread backing is not always guaranteed.
DAO Governance Challenges for Uniswap
Uniswap has faced a consistent decline in governance participation, with a substantial drop in the number of delegates voting on proposals throughout 2022 and this year. Doo mentioned that delegates of varying sizes exhibit low engagement rates, attributing the trend to Uniswap's rapid growth, making it challenging for delegates to keep up with updates and topics.
Long-Term Engagement Struggles
Despite notable launches, such as Uniswap V4 and the Android wallet, Uniswap struggles to maintain community engagement. Doo highlighted the multifaceted nature of Uniswap's downtrend, emphasizing that as organizations grow rapidly, the increasing volume of updates and topics may overwhelm delegates who lack the time or resources to stay informed.
