Security researchers presented their latest assessment of the threat from North Korea at the Cyberwarcon conference. North Korean hackers continue to masquerade as potential employees seeking jobs at multinational corporations in an effort to earn money for the country and steal corporate secrets that could aid its weapons programs, researchers said. Over the past decade, these imposters have amassed billions of dollars through stolen cryptocurrency to fund the country’s nuclear weapons program and circumvent a range of international sanctions. Microsoft security researcher James Elliott told the Cyberwarcon conference that North Korean IT workers have infiltrated “hundreds” of organizations around the world by creating fake identities, while relying on U.S. facilitators to process company-issued workstations and revenue to circumvent financial sanctions against North Koreans.
