Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, said his party received "violent threats" over Thanksgiving, including bomb warnings and false reports to law enforcement in an attempt to lure SWAT teams to homeowners. This follows similar incidents against President-elect Donald Trump's cabinet nominees.
The incidents against Democratic lawmakers included "detailed threats to place pipe bombs in mailboxes and attempts to lure SWAT teams to respond, all of which ended with 'MAGA,'" Jeffries said in a statement on Friday. The "MAGA" he was referring to was Trump's "Make America Great Again" political slogan.
Jeffries said that because law enforcement responded quickly, no devices were found, and members of Congress and their families were safe over the holiday. Some Democratic lawmakers from Connecticut said they were targeted during the Thanksgiving incidents, including Reps. Jim Himes, Rosa DeLauro and Jahana Hayes. They posted the threats they received on the X social media platform.
