Coinbase Chief Legal Officer: Americans could have legally used Tornado Cash, but were deprived of their privacy rights because of government violations

Paul Grewal, chief legal officer of Coinbase, said in a post on X: "Just a few days before the Fifth Circuit ruled that the OFAC-sanctioned code was illegal, some people in Congress raised a series of questions about how the code was used despite the sanctions. Now they will ask the obvious question in turn: How many Americans can legally use Tornado Cash but have been deprived of their privacy rights because their government violated the law?" Previously, the Fifth Circuit of the United States ruled that the Treasury Department's sanctions on the Tornado Cash smart contract were illegal.
