At the Dutch Grand Prix held over the weekend, Formula One (F1) fans attending the event had the opportunity to claim unique digital collectibles directly from the Dutch Grand Prix (Dutch GP) app.
Collaborating with GET Protocol, F1 aims to seamlessly introduce fans to Web3 technology through these digital collectibles, representing parts of the Zandvoort racetrack, where the event was held.
The collectibles will update in real-time, featuring elements from the circuit and a distinctive 'Trackside Treasure' design, offering a glimpse into the potential of Web3 for mainstream audiences.
The novel aspect of this initiative lies in its integration within the existing digital landscape. Attendees who purchase their race tickets through CM.com can conveniently claim their digital collectibles via the Dutch GP app. For those who do not already have a digital wallet, one will automatically be created for them.
These collectibles are individually linked to unique coordinates of the Zandvoort racetrack, ensuring each attendee receives a piece of the circuit. By using this approach, F1 is removing the need for users to navigate complex Web3 processes, offering a frictionless experience that reflects the strategy of fostering mainstream engagement with emerging technologies.
GET Protocol CEO Maarten Bloemers emphasises the value of this approach, stating that it showcases the potential of integrating blockchain tooling seamlessly into existing platforms. This move is a step towards embracing Web3's innovations without overwhelming users with technical complexities.
“We are thrilled to facilitate this activation that shows the power of accessible Web3 innovation for mainstream fans. We believe new tech should be frictionless & add sustainable value, which this integration of our blockchain tooling into the heart of the Dutch GP app showcases. Providing every race fan with a Web3 wallet and a collectible with zero complexity is an achievement I’m proud of and sets a new benchmark for the industry”

The Dutch Grand Prix's decision to provide NFT-like digital collectibles without explicitly using the term "NFT" reflects a wider trend in the industry to avoid the term due to its mixed public perception. This strategy highlights a shift towards making emerging technologies more approachable for mainstream users.
The collaboration between F1 and GET Protocol represents a broader trend of motorsports and entertainment industries leveraging NFTs and blockchain technology to enhance fan engagement. By delivering tangible and meaningful experiences through digital collectibles, F1 is showcasing the potential of Web3 technology in a way that resonates with fans and fits seamlessly into their existing event experience.
