In an exclusive interview with NFT.NYC, The Sandbox US CEO shared his vision for this metaverse platform.
Mathieu Nouzareth said users still flock to The Sandbox not only as a social space but also as an engaging video game.
"We want to be the Manhattan of the metaverse, with exciting brands and artists — but our vision isn't to replace reality."
In an interview with NFT.NYC on Monday — after Bitcoin briefly dipped below $20,000 — The Sandbox US CEO Mathieu Nouzareth explained the vision for his Metaverse platform and how the crypto market downturn hasn’t brought down its Metaverse visitor numbers s reason.
Mathieu Nouzareth said: "The Sandbox has not been really affected, I think it is because we are a game, and the game is less affected by the macroeconomic environment." "People come here because it is really interesting, any Anyone can enjoy it."
The Sandbox is a blockchain-based metaverse platform and video game, and a subsidiary of top Web3 venture capital firm Animoca Brands. The company made headlines for selling more than $350 million in virtual land, with one piece even fetching $4.3 million.
Nouzareth, a 27-year entrepreneurial veteran, admitted that the cryptocurrency sell-off has been painful for many investors, though he wasn't too concerned as it wasn't his first bear market.
“I’ve been through five (recessions). But if you keep your head down and focus on building, in two or three years we’re going to see some big, amazing companies pop up after that,” Nouzareth said.
He noted that the company’s overall user base has not declined during the cryptocurrency bear market. Instead, target audiences will still flock to The Sandbox. Because they're not people interested in getting rich overnight, he added.
Nouzareth explained that bear markets encourage longer-term thinking and community building, which is good for companies looking to build a platform that outlasts market cycles.
Digital "Times Square"
The Sandbox is meant to complement the existing world, rather than to lure users in such a way that they don't want to spend time in reality, he added.
On Monday, The Sandbox announced a collaboration with one of the most iconic spaces in the real world. Sandbox is partnering with Time Magazine to hold an NFT event in the digitized "Times Square," with the aim of attracting more users into the digital art and business scene.

The Sandbox aims to combine a cultural sensibility with its gaming roots - and as such, it has successfully partnered with household names such as Snoopy, Adidas, The Walking Dead and the South China Morning Post.
“It’s not a dystopian nightmare like Ready Player One,” Nouzareth said. “We want to be the Manhattan of the metaverse, with exciting brands and artists — but our vision isn’t to replace reality.”
