The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced Wednesday that the topic of an upcoming cryptocurrency panel discussion at its Dec. 2 investor advisory meeting will be "Helping Investor Protection and Market Integrity in the Face of New Technologies." Previously, on November 15, the committee announced that the meeting would be open to the public. Panelists and moderators will participate remotely.
The discussion agenda of the cryptocurrency panel will focus on the regulatory framework covering digital assets, market structure issues and defining the risks of emerging technologies. Other topics are expected to include blockchain technology, cryptocurrency-based exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and stablecoins.
Half of the panelists are working on blockchain specific work:
- Ali Emdad, professor and associate dean of Morgan State University's Earl G. Graves College of Business and Management, and founding director of the Center for Blockchain and Financial Technology Research
- Tyrone Ross, CEO, Onramp Invest
- Sydney Schaub, Chief Legal Officer, General Counsel and Company Secretary, Gemini
- Kristin Smith, Executive Director, Blockchain Association
The rest of the group is made up of renowned law professors and financial market experts.
The segment of the conference dedicated to cryptocurrency panel discussions is scheduled to run from 10:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. ET. Introductory remarks for the entire conference begin at 10:00 a.m. ET and will be webcast live on the SEC's website.
Readers may have looked forward to the SEC’s recent decision to reject Jan VanEck’s spot ETF proposal, as well as the nature of the SEC’s partnerships with cryptocurrency companies, but the specific issues discussed by the panel are not yet publicly known.
