AO Computer is a supercomputer built on Arweave. It creates scalable parallel computing by combining Erlang-style concurrency with decentralized storage.
In AO, a new world of horizontal expansion is waiting for us to explore, but this would not be possible without a pair of DePIN (Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network) projects that support AO.
Explore Arweave and AR.IO
Arweave's permanent data protocol is built on a global network of decentralized nodes that are responsible for mining and permanently storing AO data.
AR.IO is a decentralized network of incentivized gateways responsible for indexing, caching, and providing permanent data from the Arweave blockchain.
The AO computer is able to achieve hyper-parallel processing because it takes advantage of these powerful infrastructure networks.
Want to be part of the DePINs that power the AO computer? Let’s see how you can get involved:
Arweave: DePIN for Persistent Data Storage
As Sam Williams mentioned in his AO launch video, “None of this would have been possible without the last 6 years of perfecting persistent data through Arweave”.
Permanent data has the following characteristics:
Since the launch of AO, the transaction volume on Arweave has skyrocketed:
All this new data has to go somewhere, which is where Arweave mining comes in.
What is Arweave mining?
The Arweave mining process is designed to incentivize and optimize the replication of data stored on the network. This is achieved through a method involving Succinct Proofs of Random Access (SPoRAs), which are created and tested in large quantities every time a new block of data is added to the network.
The main goal of miners is to store as much data as possible. This increases their chances of having a specific piece of data required in the mining process, allowing them to successfully create a block and receive a reward.
Rewards come from several sources: transaction fees, new AR tokens generated by the network (block rewards), and a special protocolized donation. The more data a miner stores, the greater their chances of receiving these rewards, as they are more likely to pass the final check of the mining process.
Essentially, Arweave mining is a balance between using computer power (CPU) and storing large amounts of data. The mining process encourages miners to replicate as much data as possible, ensuring the robustness and reliability of the network.
This unique mining method not only ensures network security, but also incentivizes data to be widely disseminated across the network.

AR.IO: DePIN, a Permanent Data Gateway
AR.IO has developed a decentralized incentivized infrastructure so that gateway operators and developers can interact with permanent data on Arweave.
These new decentralized gateways will not only provide incentives for data services, but will also improve network performance, enabling modern applications to achieve fast downloads, data indexing, and robust queries to meet their feasibility needs.
What does it take to run an AR.IO gateway?
The AR.IO Gateway requirement provides an easier entry point for people to participate. You can set it up in just 15-30 minutes on a Raspberry Pi or laptop as long as you have:
Incentives for the AR.IO Gateway
1. Gateway Rewards - Operators who run reliable AR.IO Gateways are rewarded for their contribution to the network. 2. Observer Rewards - Observers evaluate the performance of their gateway peers to resolve ArNS names and are rewarded based on performance metrics. 3. Staking Rewards - Staking your IO tokens to an AR.IO Gateway that accepts delegated staking allows you to earn a portion of the rewards received by that gateway. This makes it possible to earn IO rewards without running a gateway. 4. Fees - Gateway operators are free to charge users whatever rate they wish. However, be aware that other gateway operators will also be offering their services, so find your niche and price accordingly.
