Survey: More than one-fifth of young Americans own Crypto assets

According to a survey released by Policy Genius on April 9, more than one-fifth of young people in the United States own Crypto assets, and the younger generation invests in Crypto assets four times more frequently than the older generation.

Compared with traditional investments, Generation Z (New Age People) aged 18 to 26 have the highest preference for Crypto assets. 20% of Generation Z respondents said they own Crypto assets, 18% own stocks, 13% own real estate, and 11% own bonds.

Millennials aged 27 to 42 invest in Crypto assets slightly more frequently than Generation Z respondents, with 22% owning Crypto assets.

However, the Crypto asset holding rate of Millennials has not exceeded the traditional investment rate. 27% invest in stocks and 24% invest in real estate. Bonds are less popular among this age group, with only 16% investing in bonds.

The survey also found that 9% of Gen Z respondents own NFTs, compared to only 8% of Millennials.

While each generation’s investment rate shows some interest in Crypto assets in absolute terms, the investment rate of Gen Z becomes very significant when compared to older generations.

Policy Genius found that the overall ownership rate of Crypto assets among the oldest two generations is significantly lower.

Among Generation X (those born between the mid-1960s and late 1970s), 10% of respondents own Crypto assets and 4% own NFTs.

Meanwhile, only 5% of Boomers (those born between 1946-1964) own Crypto assets and 1% of Boomers own NFTs.

The generation gap also relates to real estate investment, with 21% of respondents owning Crypto assets and 20% owning real estate if the investment rates of Generation Z and Millennials are considered together.

However, while investment rates within age groups are very similar, older investors have a much higher rate of real estate investment, with 45% of Boomer investors choosing real estate, for example.

Housing shortages and high housing costs may discourage younger people from investing in real estate, increasing the appeal of alternative investments such as Crypto assets, the report said.
