Telegram launches in-app browser with support for decentralized websites

Telegram, a cryptocurrency-friendly social messaging platform, has launched a new in-app browser that supports decentralized websites.
These decentralized websites, called "TON websites," are now available on mobile and desktop devices, the Telegram team said in a July 31 article.
"This makes Web3 immediately available to our nearly 1 billion monthly users."
"The browser lets users switch between browsing websites and sending messages, fusing communication with news consumption," Telegram CEO Pavel Durov noted in a July 31 article.
The TON website allows Telegram users to launch a web server with their website and make it available on the open web.
Meanwhile, Telegram announced the launch of its Mini App Store, which the company had previously promised would be launched by the end of July.
Telegram users can now also send "stars" (the unit of the Mini App payment system) to friends.

Of Telegram’s 950 million users, more than 500 million interact with mini-programs each month.
One of the most popular Telegram apps is Hamster Kombat, which has only been online for four months and recently surpassed 300 million players.
Hamster Kombat is a crypto game where players can earn tokens and upgrade virtual cryptocurrency exchanges by clicking on hamsters. Telegram claims that it is the third fastest app to reach 150 million players.
Web3 social entertainment platform Catizen is another Telegram-based app that has seen widespread adoption.
Since its launch in March, Catizen has amassed 26 million players and earned $16 million through in-app purchases, Durov said in a statement on July 23.
About $160,000 of that has been used to save stray cats.
Hamster Combat and Catizen use the Open Network’s native cryptocurrency, Toncoin (TON), which has risen 467% in the past 12 months to $6.78, according to CoinGecko data.
The Open Network blockchain is also evolving.
The TON Core team recently partnered with Tonkeeper to launch the W5 smart wallet standard, which promises to provide gas-free transactions.
Tonkeeper CEO Oleg Andreev noted on July 25 that the feature is part of a further effort to bring cryptocurrency to the masses.
“New users can now participate in TON’s ecosystem without having to first acquire Toncoin, significantly lowering the barrier to entry.”
