Jimmy Wales, a co-founder of Wikipedia, has been vociferously expressing his stance against Bitcoin. Recently, on social media platform 'X', he shared a comprehensive analysis critiquing the cryptocurrency, emphasizing the notable distinctions between Bitcoin and the well-established stability of traditional banking systems.
In a recent comment, the well-known British-American internet entrepreneur raised doubts about the reliability of Bitcoin (BTC) when compared to more conventional assets. Wales shared a personal anecdote where he claimed to have forgotten his bank password, resulting in the loss of his entire net wealth.
Not a Fan
Surprisingly, the founder of Wikipedia has had a change of heart regarding Bitcoin. He has ventured into the world of cryptocurrencies, investing in a BTC pool and enthusiastically sharing his experiences.
Coincidentally, around the same time, Wikipedia began accepting donations in cryptocurrency. However, in 2017, the founder's dislike for the leading cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, became apparent. Since then, his opposition to Bitcoin has remained unwavering.
Wales's public comment reflects his skepticism or disagreement with the principles and processes of the most widely adopted cryptocurrency, aligning with his firm stance on Bitcoin.
Crypto Community Fires Back
Prominent members of the crypto community have retaliated against his remarks. Renowned Bitcoin supporter Samson Mow made allusion to a squandered opportunity when he said:
"You wouldn't have to beg for donations every year in eternity if Wikipedia merely bought #Bitcoin a few years ago like I advised.”
The comment received strong pushback from notable figures in the cryptocurrency industry, including Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino, who argued that a decentralized Wikipedia will ultimately replace it.
John Deaton, an attorney who is a supporter of XRP, personally countered Wales's narrative. Deaton recounted an incident where he attempted to withdraw $19,000 in cash from a bank. However, the bank teller refused to cooperate, citing the manager's absence, which resulted in significant delays.
Similarly, ShapeShift CEO Eric Voorhees highlighted the possible financial gain Wikipedia might have had from early Bitcoin investment.
On the other hand, Billy Markus, the founder of Dogecoin, commented on Wikipedia's donation request on its website, echoing Voorhees' viewpoint.
The differing viewpoints of the Wikipedia founder and cryptocurrency enthusiasts like Deaton and Markus offer valuable context to the ongoing debate regarding the reliability of traditional banking compared to the potential of cryptocurrencies.
