According to CoinDesk, Celestia, a data availability (DA) solution provider, has announced its integration with Polygon's Chain Development Kit (CDK). The CDK is a set of software tools used to create new layer-2 networks on top of Ethereum. This integration allows Celestia to plug into Polygon's customizable software stack, powered by zero-knowledge technology, enabling developers to utilize the DA solution when launching their own blockchain. Celestia's DA solution is expected to be available to developers in early 2024.
Launched in October, Celestia aims to significantly reduce costs for layer-2 networks by eliminating the need for constant fees paid to Ethereum for data storage and verification. Polygon co-founder Sandeep Nailwal compared the integration to the 'broadband moment for Web3,' stating that launching a high-throughput, zero-knowledge-powered Ethereum layer-2 network will boost blockchain adoption similarly to how high-speed fiber impacted Web2 applications.
While Ethereum has its own roadmap for handling data, its developers have been slow to implement it, leading to the emergence of independent networks like Celestia, Avail, and rival layer-1 blockchain NEAR. Avail, initially incubated within Polygon, was spun out in March to align more closely with Ethereum's roadmap. With Celestia's integration, builders using Polygon's CDK will now have the option to use Celestia for their data availability needs. Polygon may also offer other data availability solutions, such as Avail, when they become available. Avail, run by Polygon co-founder Anurag Arjun, recently launched a test network and is set to go live in 2024.
