According to Blockworks, December 13 marks an important date in Bitcoin's history as it was the last time Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin, was publicly active. On December 13, 2010, at 4:45 pm ET, Nakamoto's final public message focused on work on denial-of-service prevention. By that time, Nakamoto had already handed off their role as maintainer of Bitcoin's open-source to developer Gavin Andresen.
On December 11, 2010, Satoshi Nakamoto expressed concerns on the Bitcointalk forum about the increasing mainstream attention Bitcoin was receiving, prompted by WikiLeaks' consideration of Bitcoin for donations after losing service from major payment processors. Nakamoto remarked, 'It would have been nice to get this attention in any other context. WikiLeaks has kicked the hornet's nest, and the swarm is headed towards us.'
Although Nakamoto signed off from their public perch, they continued to correspond privately with Bitcoin's early developers. Nakamoto's final private message came months later in an email to developer Michael Hern, stating, 'I've moved on to other things.' The true identity of Satoshi Nakamoto remains unknown and a source of intense speculation and controversy.
