MIT Study Explores Running Doom Game on E. Coli Bacteria

According to Decrypt, a new student study from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) suggests that the influential first-person shooter game Doom could theoretically run using E. coli bacteria. MIT biotech graduate student researcher Lauren "Ren" Ramlan proposed using E. coli cells contained in a 32x48 well plate connected to a display controller, with the wells functioning as pixels. A display controller would translate the graphics of Doom into signals controlling the fluorescence of the cells. However, Ramlan noted that fully running the game this way could potentially take centuries due to the time it takes for the E. coli cells to reach peak display and return to their original state. The classic game has previously been ported to various devices and even blockchain networks, such as Bitcoin and Dogecoin.
