Archer Aviation Set to Revolutionise Los Angeles Transport with Air Taxis by 2026

With the 2028 Olympics approaching, Los Angeles might see a significant change in how people travel. Archer Aviation, a company specialising in electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, has received approval from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to operate its air taxi service in the city.

eVTOL Aircraft Explained

Founded in 2018, Archer's eVTOL aircraft function like helicopters during takeoff and landing but transition to propeller-driven flight. This dual capability offers a quieter and more cost-effective alternative to traditional helicopters. Existing helipads, airports, and newly built infrastructure can accommodate these aircraft, offering flexibility in crowded urban areas.

The Need for Air Mobility

As urban populations continue to grow, road expansion isn't feasible. Archer’s Chief Commercial Officer, Nikhil Goel, highlights that building upwards is the logical solution for mobility in cities. By utilising the airspace above, Archer’s eVTOL aircraft provide an innovative way to alleviate traffic congestion.

Industry Partnerships

Archer has developed a strong network of partners, including United Airlines and Southwest Airlines, to support its operations. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Defense has shown interest, purchasing the first Midnight aircraft in a $142 million deal.

Upcoming Deployment

Archer plans to deploy its Midnight aircraft in Los Angeles by early 2026. The company’s flight network will include key locations such as Los Angeles International Airport, Sofi Stadium, and the University of Southern California. This network will be particularly advantageous during major events like the Olympic Games and the Super Bowl.
