Contrasting Perspective on AI's Future
Two of the tech industry's most prominent voices presented divergent views on the future of artificial intelligence (AI), underscoring the growing tension between innovation and safety.
In a Sunday blog post, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed that the company's user base has tripled to over 300 million weekly active users, as it accelerates toward artificial general intelligence (AGI).
Altman expressed confidence in OpenAI's ability to build AGI, forecasting that by 2025, AI agents could "join the workforce" and significantly impact business productivity.
He also hinted at ambitions to develop "superintelligence," though a timeline for its realisation remains unclear.
Meanwhile, hours before Altman's announcement, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin proposed leveraging blockchain technology to implement global failsafe mechanisms for AI systems, including a "soft pause" feature that could temporarily halt large-scale AI operations if red flags arise.
AI Needs Robust Safety Mechanisms
Buterin introduced the concept of "d/acc" or decentralised/defensive acceleration, a more cautious approach to technological progress.
In contrast to "e/acc" (effective acceleration), which champions unchecked growth, d/acc supports innovation while prioritising safety and human agency.
High-profile Silicon Valley advocates like Marc Andreessen have endorsed e/acc's "growth at any cost" mentality, whereas Buterin's model emphasizes building defensive structures first.
Buterin wrote:
"D/acc is an extension of the underlying values of crypto (decentralization, censorship resistance, open global economy and society) to other areas of technology."
Reflecting on d/acc's evolution over the past year, Buterin proposed a more cautious path for AGI and superintelligent systems, leveraging existing crypto mechanisms like zero-knowledge proofs.
Under his framework, AI systems would require weekly approvals from three international groups to remain operational.
Buterin explained:
"The signatures would be device-independent (if desired, we could even require a zero-knowledge proof that they were published on a blockchain), so it would be all-or-nothing: there would be no practical way to authorize one device to keep running without authorizing all other devices."
This setup would act like a master switch, ensuring that all approved computers run simultaneously or none do, preventing selective enforcement and providing a safeguard against potential disasters:
"Until such a critical moment happens, merely having the capability to soft-pause would cause little harm to developers."
AI Ready or Not?
The proposals underscore ongoing debates within the industry about how to balance AI advancement with safety.
Advocates for global control systems argue that achieving this would necessitate unprecedented collaboration among AI developers, governments, and the crypto sector.
Buterin added:
"A year of 'wartime mode' can easily be worth a hundred years of work under conditions of complacency. If we have to limit people, it seems better to limit everyone on an equal footing and do the hard work of actually trying to cooperate to organize that instead of one party seeking to dominate everyone else.”
