Former FTX Executive Ryan Salame's Sentencing Delayed to May 28

The sentencing for former FTX co-CEO Ryan Salame has been rescheduled to May 28, as confirmed by a filing in Southern New York District Court. The reason for the postponement from the original date of May 1 remains unclear.

Salame was among four members of FTX's top management charged by the United States government in connection with the collapse of the cryptocurrency exchange. Notably, Salame refrained from testifying against fellow co-CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, distinguishing himself from the other three charged individuals, including former Alameda Research head Caroline Ellison, FTX co-founder Gray Wang, and former FTX top engineer Nishad Singh.

Reports indicate that all four executives reached plea deals with U.S. prosecutors. Salame, who is currently free on a $1-million bond, pleaded guilty to federal charges linked to the FTX collapse. Additionally, he faces charges related to campaign finance violations associated with his girlfriend Michelle Bond's failed campaign for New York's First District in the House of Representatives. Bond's candidacy ended with her defeat in the Republican primary.

Both sets of charges against Salame carry potential sentences of up to five years in prison. Notably, Bankman-Fried's legal team contested the campaign contribution violation charges, arguing that they were not part of his extradition agreement from the Bahamas. However, these charges were later consolidated into the broader conspiracy to commit fraud charges against him. Bankman-Fried, who pleaded not guilty during his trial, claimed that he did not discuss his political donations with Salame.

Despite his purported lack of involvement in Bankman-Fried's inner circle, Salame's role in the events at FTX remains somewhat ambiguous. Reports suggest that he was taken aback by news of the exchange's collapse, to the extent of becoming physically unwell. However, records from a Bahamian court revealed that Salame had notified the country's Securities Commission of irregularities at the exchange in November 2022, leading to an investigation.
