On November 3, American rapper Wiz Khalifa’s X account was reportedly hacked, exposing his 35.7 million followers to a cryptocurrency scam. In the now deleted post on X, the hackers falsely claimed that Khalifa was partnering with his team to launch a new token, $WIZ, specifically for his crypto fans.
In just 15 mins since the launch of the WIZ memecoin token-deployed on the Solana-based memecoin launchpad pump.fun- the price of the token rallied to a peak valuation of $3.4 million.
However, the token’s market cap crashed just as swiftly, plunging to under $28,000 within an hour as early buyers began to offload huge sums of the tokens. As of the latest data from DEX Screener, $WIZ’s is currently trading at a value of $8,400.
Blockchain analysis from Solscan shows that two main wallets bought 155 million $WIZ tokens for $19,100 and then liquidated, reaping profits of approximately $160,000. Blockchain investigator ZachXBT confirmed that the hacker responsible for Khalifa’s account had previously compromised the X account of Truth Terminal creator Andy Ayrey on October 29.
On November 3, ZachXBT warned his followers to steer clear of $WIZ, linking the scam to the same attacker who exploited Ayrey’s account.
"Do not buy the Wiz Khalifa Pump Fun token, it's the same hacker who compromised Andy Ayrey the other day," said Zach in a message on Nov 3 to his public Telegram group.
The promotional posts have since been removed, though it remains unclear if Khalifa has fully regained control of his account.
Wiz Khalifa's team has yet to comment on the breach, and there has been no indication that control of the account has been fully restored.
This incident closely mirrors Ayrey’s earlier hack, in which his account was used to promote fraudulent memecoins, yielding hackers an estimated $1.5 million. These attacks underscore the dangers of high-profile social media accounts being hijacked to draw followers into investment scams.
