Elon Musk, known for his visionary endeavours, as well as challenging Mark Zuckerbeg to a fight, has recently unveiled an intriguing development in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).
After dropping hints for several months, Elon has officially announced the establishment of xAI, an ambitious venture with a captivating mission: to “understand the true nature of the universe.” In his quest to offer an alternative to ChatGPT, he had previously unveiled his aspiration to develop a ground-breaking AI platform named TruthGPT and it will be "maximum truth-seeking AI that tries to understand the nature of the universe.”
On its website, xAI introduced the team, spearheaded by the eccentric man himself Elon Musk, and fortified by a group of executives hailing from renowned organisations at the forefront of AI. Drawing talent from prestigious institutions like Google's DeepMind, Microsoft Corp., Tesla Inc., and the esteemed University of Toronto, xAI boasts a diverse line-up of experts well-versed in pushing the boundaries of AI innovation.
Greg Yang, one of xAI’s co-founders, mentioned in a tweet that xAI aims to take AI to the next level by developing a mathematical “‘theory of everything’ for large neural networks.”
During a Twitter Space event that occurred with xAI’s launch, Elon shared intriguing insights about his recent visit to China and the potential for cooperative international collaboration in the field of AI.
His remarks shed light on his conversations with Chinese counterparts, revealing a mutual interest in establishing a framework that promotes cooperation in AI endeavours, “China is definitely interested in working in a cooperative international framework for AI regulation.”
Moderate Boosts Seen in AI-related Crypto Tokens
After the announcement of xAI, crypto tokens associated with AI, such as SingularityNET (AGIX), experienced an impressive rise of over 6%, while Fetch.ai (FET) ascended by approximately 3%.
He Had Warned Repeatedly of the Dangers of AI
Controversially, Elon, instrumental in the establishment of OpenAI — the AI start-up responsible for the development of ChatGPT — has been an outspoken critic of the organisation since his departure from its board in 2018. His concerns heightened following OpenAI's decision to establish a for-profit division in the subsequent year, which he believes has led to an undue level of influence from Microsoft, who has invested a staggering $13 billion into OpenAI.
Despite being recognised for his substantial contributions, he has also voiced profound concerns regarding the implications of this transformative technology. Elon, along with a cohort of esteemed researchers and leaders from the tech industry, publicly advocated for a temporary halt in training powerful AI models just a few months ago.
As seen on xAI’s website, Dan Hendrycks, director of the Centre for AI Safety, lends expertise to the company, underscoring the significance of mitigating potential risks. However, the Centre, steadfast in its commitment to safeguard against the existential perils associated with rapid AI development, has garnered attention and concern. Earlier this year, the Centre spearheaded a poignant letter of caution, co-signed by eminent CEOs from industry titans such as DeepMind, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., and OpenAI.
During a recent discussion addressing concerns about the absence of women on xAI's founding team, an intriguing insight was shared by one of the company's representatives. Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn and of the start-up Inflection AI, as well as a former board member of OpenAI, emphasised the significance of inclusive voices within the AI landscape.
He went on to express criticism towards Elon Musk's earlier endorsement of a temporary pause in AI development — a stance Elon himself supported prior to the establishment of xAI, “I look a little bit askance at signing a six month pause while you’re trying to accelerate your own effort.”
xAI is Pretty Much Shrouded in Mystery
Elon Musk's foray into the realm of AI with xAI is undeniably fuelled by a mix of concern and perhaps a touch of fear of missing out (FOMO), given the meteoric ascent of ChatGPT. Known for his propensity for audacious ventures, hiss latest endeavour raises intriguing questions.
While xAI's goals remain shrouded in mystery, they appear to deviate from the established path. A critical assessment reveals potential challenges lying ahead — the disparity in cloud computing capabilities suggests that xAI may struggle to match the formidable resources wielded by industry giants like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google.
Additionally, the size of xAI's AI research team appears modest in comparison to the vast armies of researchers deployed by established firms. Elon’s lofty ambitions to rival existing AI giants and safeguard humanity from the perils of AI make xAI's humble beginnings appear even more diminutive. Many AI researchers who share concerns about AI's trajectory view the challenge as one necessitating greater transparency and collaboration, rather than relying on the efforts of a solitary genius and a select group of all-stars.
Also, much of the recent advancements in AI have stemmed from scaling existing models, harnessing greater computational power and vast amounts of data. The imminent transformative impact of AI across various sectors hinges on deploying this predominantly mature technology.
I guess we will have to wait to find out more as the xAI team has announced a Twitter Spaces chat scheduled for 14 July. During this session, hopefully the team will delve into the intricate details of xAI's mission and shed light on the company's upcoming endeavours.
