Crypto mixer Helix founder's brother pleads guilty to stealing 712 bitcoins from the IRS

Gary James Harmon, younger brother of crypto mixer Helix founder Larry Harmon, pleaded guilty to wire fraud and obstruction of justice, and admitted to stealing 712 bitcoins from the IRS. The bitcoins were confiscated by law enforcement following Larry Harmon's 2020 arrest, which used a seed phrase to recreate multiple wallets belonging to Larry Harmon, according to a memo filed by prosecutors in August 2021. In April he transferred the tokens to his wallet, and in July 2021 federal agents arrested Gary Harmon and searched his Ohio home. As part of his plea agreement, Gary Harmon agreed to hand over more than $12 million in cryptocurrencies, including 647 bitcoins, 2 ETH and 17.4 million dogecoins, and he faces up to 40 years in prison. Foresight News noted that in October 2020, the U.S. Financial Crimes Enforcement Agency (FinCEN) imposed a $60 million civil damages award on Larry Harmon for allegedly violating the federal Bank Secrecy Act (BSA). FinCEN claimed that Harmon was operating with Helix Related unlicensed money transfer operations.
