Vitalik Buterin discusses whether ENS names should introduce demand-based recurring fees

Vitalik Buterin wrote an article discussing whether ENS domain names should introduce demand-based recurring fees. He explained that currently registering an ENS domain name is very cheap. The cost of registering and maintaining a five-letter domain name is only $5 per year, and the ENS DAO earns income Far below what it could have earned, is this the best way to distribute domain names? Some alternative solutions are demand-based recurring pricing or demand-based periodic pricing caps, such as making the fee somehow dependent on the actual level of market demand for the domain name, or factoring in the number of years of registration. Vitalik Buterin said that if making changes to ENS domain pricing itself is not possible, then a market-based approach should be strongly considered, i.e. markets with different rules in subdomains are explicitly encouraged.
