The case involves an IRS investigation into James Harper, requiring cryptocurrency exchange Kraken to provide data on cryptocurrency transaction records of more than 14,000 people, including Harper, for tax enforcement purposes. Kraken said it sought to fight back against the order, arguing it was an abuse of power that could expose users' personal data such as IP addresses, net worth, employment data and sources of wealth. The DeFi Education Fund contends that courts must consider the differences between crypto and traditional financial institutions. They noted that blockchain data provides the government with unprecedented access to individuals’ financial lives, which could violate the Fourth Amendment rights of U.S. citizens.
