Bakong, the digital currency initiative launched by the National Bank of Cambodia in 2020, has now partnered with Alipay to further expand its coverage. Cambodians with a fully bank-linked KYC Bakong wallet can make overseas payments at merchants linked to Alipay.
Separately, Bakong developer Soramitsu is developing Japan’s cross-border digital currency system Mukumi, which will be connected to Bakong. The aim is to enable Japanese merchants to sell goods in Southeast Asia using QR codes linked to Bakong. Target countries include Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam, which all accept Bakong.
