The Hong Kong High Court recently tried a virtual currency USDT robbery case. A female seller successfully completed 4 transactions with a buyer, with a total collection of more than HK$6.87 million. The female seller later went to a building unit in Kwun Tong without warning and made a transaction of HK$3.5 million with the buyer. Suddenly, four masked gangsters hiding in the room rushed out, threatened the female seller with knives and electric guns, and took away the plastic bag containing cash.
Three of them were arrested and pleaded guilty to robbery and other charges in the High Court on November 23 and were sentenced to four years and eight months in prison. The full-time judge pointed out that the case was well planned, and the criminals disguised themselves as the owners of virtual currency transactions and took the opportunity to rob.
When sentencing, the full-time judge said that the case was well planned and that each defendant had a premeditated crime. Each played a different role. They first pretended to conduct virtual currency transactions with the victim, and then committed the robbery when the victim was alone. Before the crime, they also arranged vehicle pick-up and drop-off to ensure that they could escape quickly after the crime.
The case pointed out that the female victim surnamed Yin and her husband began trading virtual currency (USDT) in 2018, and in December 2020, they met the male buyer who is currently wanted. Within a month, they went to the buyer's office involved in the case and successfully completed 4 USDT buying and selling transactions, collecting a total of more than HK$6.87 million. (TOPick)
