Self-Hosted Lightning Wallet Mutiny Wallet Now in Public Beta, No App Store Download Required
According to The Block, the self-hosted lightning wallet Mutiny Wallet has entered the public beta stage and does not need to be downloaded through the Apple or Google App Store. Mutiny Wallet said it leverages Jack Dorsey’s Block’s Lightning Development Kit project, which provides developers with customizable control over every aspect of the Lightning stack, including the ability to compile for the network. To simplify liquidity management for users, Mutiny is also partnering with Lightning infrastructure project Voltage to help users receive payments without having to worry about opening channels or managing liquidity. This means users can receive their first Lightning payments within seconds of launching the app. Mutiny stated that unified balances are the ultimate goal of the wallet, but currently the wallet still separates funds locked in Lightning channels from funds currently available for on-chain spending. Mutiny Wallet uses mnemonic phrases to secure on-chain funds and provides encryption and remote storage to restore users' Lightning-related data when clearing browser storage or migrating devices. In the future, Mutiny plans to allow the same wallet to be used on multiple devices simultaneously. Mutiny Wallet also integrates with Nostr Wallet Connect, allowing users to request payments directly from the wallet, facilitating social tipping on Nostr clients like Damus and Amethyst, and enabling further decentralized payment integrations like subscriptions. While payments currently require manual approval, Mutiny Wallet plans to roll out automated payments in the future. Mutiny Wallet admits that some bugs and limitations may still be encountered during the beta phase, so caution should be exercised when transferring large amounts of funds to the wallet in the early stages.
