Apple says it will suspend the rollout of its "Apple Intelligence" initiative in Europe. Citing government regulations, Apple said it will not launch several new features, including its upcoming AI toolkit, in the European Union.
Earlier this month, Apple unveiled a slew of AI features and services at its annual WWDC conference. Dubbed "Apple Intelligence," the features and services will bring AI enhancements to its entire product line. Apple also announced a partnership with OpenAI to make its flagship AI model, ChatGPT, available as an optional feature in the Siri virtual assistant. Apple said new EU commercial competition rules led to its decision to suspend AI upgrades and specific features of the iPhone, including iPhone Mirroring and SharePlay Screen Sharing. The decision could affect millions of users, as well as sales of upcoming new hardware.
Apple said: "Due to regulatory uncertainty arising from the Digital Markets Act (DMA), it is not considered possible to launch three of these features to EU users this year." The law imposes specific obligations, bans and fines on companies, aiming to address conflicts of interest and provide a level playing field for European companies. (Decrypt)
