The question of whether a bipartisan bill to restrict lawmakers' stock trading should also apply to their cryptocurrency holdings has divided the two sponsors of the House stock ban legislation.
Reports say that Virginia Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger and Sask. Republican Rep. Chip Roy are leading the push for the bill, which would require stocks to be placed in a blind trust so that lawmakers cannot trade on privileged information.
Abigail Spanberger insists that stocks and cryptocurrencies are similar in that their value can be affected by lawmakers. Their conflict is the latest indicator of the nascent crypto industry's growing visibility in Washington, and more than $100 million has been spent on supporting the election of crypto-friendly politicians who could help create a more favorable regulatory environment, but Chip Roy doesn't think so.
