In the past week, at least three Coinbase users and one cryptocurrency user disclosed that they were targeted by scammers impersonating Coinbase, with one victim being defrauded of $1.7 million.
According to what Node co-founder Tegan Kline shared on X Platform on July 7, a "good friend"'s self-hosted wallet was stolen for $1.7 million the day before because a scammer tricked them into sharing part of their seed phrase.
The victim said that the scammer called and claimed to be Coinbase's security team and sent the victim an email that appeared to be from Coinbase, confirming that the victim was "talking to an official representative of Coinbase."
The scammer claimed that the victim's wallet was "directly connected to the blockchain," resulting in transactions being sent from the wallet. Then, the scammer sent another email that appeared to be from Coinbase, showing a transfer transaction. The scammer directed the victim to a website and asked them to enter the seed phrase to stop the transaction. The victim knew that this was "unsafe," but still entered a "partial" seed phrase but did not submit it. A few hours later, $1.7 million in crypto assets were stolen from the victim's wallet.
