Evernode co-founder Scott Chamberlain recently proposed a new system to introduce programmability to the XRP Ledger (XRPL), sparking debate about potential fee increases. The proposal introduces Hooks, smart contract-like functions, and a new token called Codii to execute these Hooks.
Chamberlain explained that Evernode is a decentralized custody platform that already uses four Hooks on the Xahau sidechain to manage reward distribution, custody registration, reputation system, and governance. However, in order to fully bring Evernode to the XRPL mainnet, Chamberlain suggested that Codii be introduced as a token specifically used to pay Hook-related fees.
Codii would be minted by locking up XRP and destroying it for executing Hooks, while XRP would continue to handle standard transaction fees.
However, this proposal was questioned by Ripple CTO David Schwartz. Schwartz believes that the plan is too complicated and has no obvious benefits. He questioned whether a new token like Codii is needed because XRP can be used to pay all fees, simplifying the system.
He stressed that adding programmable features such as Hooks will increase demand on XRPL's limited resources, potentially raising transaction fees for all users, not just those using Hooks. (Coin Edition)
