Alex Thorn, head of research at Galaxy Digital, said options listings on the $43 billion BlackRock IBIT could reduce volatility and increase the investor base for bitcoin.
“Over time, as it becomes more widely held, volatility will decrease, and options will help dampen volatility, and as volatility decreases, people can take larger position sizes,” Thorn said in an interview on Tuesday.
Nasdaq Inc. began offering options trading for ETFs for the first time on Tuesday. Thorn said if volatility decreases, more investors will see bitcoin as a fundamental use case rather than just a high-risk bet.
Options will allow institutions to hedge more on bitcoin and increase liquidity, while also affecting retail trading when a bull run occurs, he said. The crypto industry also has to figure out how to maintain control as traditional finance enters the space, he added. (Bloomberg)
