Amazon Web Services has announced Project Rainier, a massive AI supercomputer made up of hundreds of thousands of its in-house Trainium chips that will be operational by 2025.
At its annual AWS re:Invent conference, AWS unveiled Project Rainier, billed as the world’s largest AI computing cluster that will be used by Anthropic, an AI startup in which Amazon recently invested $4 billion.
AWS’s Trainium chips were designed by Texas-based Amazon-owned Annapurna Labs. Annapurna was acquired in 2015 and has fueled Amazon’s AI chip development, aiming to reduce its reliance on Nvidia.
The company also unveiled a new Ultraserver during the event, which features 64 interconnected Trainium chips. AWS also announced Apple as one of its latest chip customers. Benoit Dupin, Apple’s senior director of machine learning and artificial intelligence, noted that they are testing the Trainium2 chip and expect cost savings of about 50%. (CryptoBriefing)
