U.S. tech groups urge Biden administration not to issue new rules restricting global access to AI chips

A technology industry group urged the Biden administration on Tuesday not to issue rules to restrict global access to artificial intelligence (AI) chips as the president is about to end his term, warning that such restrictions would jeopardize U.S. leadership in AI. The Information Technology Industry Council, which represents companies such as Amazon (AMZN.O), Microsoft and Meta, said the rule would impose arbitrary restrictions on the ability of U.S. companies to sell computing systems overseas and hand over global markets to competitors. The rule could be issued as early as Friday. In a letter to U.S. Commerce Secretary Raimondo, the council's CEO Jason Oxman criticized the U.S. government for "insisting" on issuing the rule in the last days of Biden's term. (Jin Shi)
