The co-founder of the popular Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT line slammed Discord yesterday after its servers were exploited and 200 ETH ($358,962) worth of NFTs were stolen from users.
Discord, a chat app popular with the crypto community, is “not for the Web3 community,” Gordon Goner wrote on Twitter on Saturday.
"We need a better platform that puts safety first," he added.
BAYC acknowledged the attack on Twitter, adding, "The team discovered and fixed it quickly."
Yuga Labs, the team behind the NFT series, said they are investigating the incident. But others in the crypto community said the attack was the fault of BAYC Discord users.
"Don't blame Discord for users socializing, opening DMs, and clicking phishing links," wrote analyst OKHotshot. "Before blaming, use the tools properly."
And Cory.eth, creator and developer of the NFT series OpenAvatar, added that users “just need to get better at using the technology.”
BAYC is a hugely popular series of quirky ape avatars minted as NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain. The rich and famous, including Eminem, Madonna, and billionaire Mark Cuban, have all bought.
NFTs (non-fungible tokens) are proofs of ownership of digital items, and they are being used by some to help revolutionize the art and music worlds.
Owners of Bored Apes will have access to an exclusive Discord channel where they can discuss NFTs.
But Saturday's attack wasn't the first time attackers took advantage of BAYC's social media channels. Just last month, BAYC’s official Instagram account was hacked, and thieves stole a total of $2.8 million in NFTs from users’ wallets by sharing a link to a scam website.
