Storybook Brawl has been review-bombed on Steam by angry gamers after cryptocurrency exchange FTX acquired its developer, Good Luck Games, LLC, fearing it might integrate NFTs and blockchain.
Storybook Brawl is a free-to-play auto-battle card game released on the online gaming platform Steam in mid-2021. The review history for the game shows that it received a ton of support until March 22, the day FTX US announced its acquisition.
Since then, the game has gone into "very negative" status, with 600 of the past 761 reviews being negative. While people who haven't played the game can also leave feedback, since the game doesn't have to be paid for, many of the reviews are from players who put in a lot of time with the game.
"Our big family doesn't support NFTs. Sad end to a great auto-battle game.," wrote Steam user "asnugglekitten," who has put in over 130 hours into the game. Another player named "King Bear" put in over 60 hours on the game and wrote:
“Good Luck Games was bought by crypto firm FTX as a way to ‘help crypto break into gamers.’ “I don’t want to be a part of it, and I don’t want crypto to ‘hack’ things I’m interested in. Uninstalled. "
Storybook Brawl Review: Steam
Storybook Brawl will be integrated into FTX US’s blockchain gaming division as part of the acquisition, with FTX co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried outlining the company’s broader plans to be “ethical in a way unprecedented in the space.” Integrate gaming and crypto trading in a seamless manner”.
Sponsored Business Content On March 23, Matt Place, the founder of Good Luck Games, also emphasized when talking about the move that this is good news for both players and the company, because they finally got the funding to upgrade the game to AAA.
This may not allay the concerns of a large number of crypto-skeptical players, but Place also pointed out that FTX US did not require blockchain technology to be integrated into the game:
"We're going to explore blockchain technology...how can we really use it to create value and create fun for players. When we find that, we'll build it into the game, and if we don't, we don't have to do it." .”
While NFTs, cryptocurrencies, and blockchain have been widely adopted by artists and gamers, there are still plenty of skeptics in both communities.
For many gamers who are against cryptocurrencies, the main sticking points tend to revolve around scams, cash grabs and the environmental impact of cryptocurrencies — even though there are more efficient blockchain solutions than proof-of-work chains available for gaming.
A number of legacy games and companies have faced outrage over the potential integration so far, including Ubisoft, Discord (a social media platform popular with gamers), Electronic Arts, and Worms developer Team17.
