FC Barcelona, in partnership with Ownix, will debut its collection of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) focused on strengthening connections with a global audience.
The collection will showcase historic moments from the club's 122-year history, including trophy displays of 95 domestic and international victories, including 26 Nations League titles and five Champions League titles, according to Wikipedia archives.
The digital assets will be issued through Ownix’s marketplace, which is expected to launch in the last week of November using the platform’s native ERC-20 token, ONX.
Cointelegraph caught up with Ownix CEO Guy Elhanani to gain an exclusive look at the partnership.
Cointelegraph: Will Barcelona fans around the world get immediate access to this NFT collection, or will season ticket holders and other core groups get early access?
"We will open our NFT collection to all Barcelona fans and anyone around the world, we are not limited to the fan base."
NFTs are rapidly being adopted in the sports world, not only because of their lucrative economic appeal, but also because they are an opportunity to engage fans and supporters around the world in more immersive and personal experiences. Companies such as Dapper Labs, Sorare and Socios have all made considerable inroads in this nascent field, partnering with some of the world's top professional leagues, clubs and athletes.
Sorare, an ethereum-based NFT marketplace, recently signed a partnership with Spain’s top soccer league, La Liga, to launch player digital cards, and with Germany’s Bundesliga, to launch digital moments.
The platform reported that transaction volume for the full year of 2021 has exceeded $170 million and is expected to double by the end of the year.
Cointelegraph: How will these assets be launched on the market? Via a Dutch auction, a limited edition sale, or a casting event, etc.?
“The first batch of 5 NFTs will be launched at a minting event at the FCB venue in the coming weeks. During the first few weeks after launch, the platform will offer unique items as NFTs. Afterwards, limited edition and series pieces will also be auctioned off. "
To wrap up the conversation, Cointelegraph asked Elhanani to share his expectations for Barcelona fans and supporters to embrace this new asset class.
He expressed a high level of "enthusiasm" for adoption as both parties seek a deeper partnership, a sentiment echoed by FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta.
