More NFT boycotts
Korean pop (K-pop) icon Sunmi, also known as Miyane, has faced fan backlash related to an NFT collectible she and her agency Abyss Company launched last week.
Launched on the 23rd, the "Sunmiya Club" project consists of 10,000 computer-generated NFTs depicting various cartoon Sunmi images. However, some of her fans slammed the entertainer for just trying to "make some quick bucks for her company".
On Monday, Sunmi shared a statement from Abyss Company about the backlash, but the company only reiterated its long-standing stance on the project and didn't seem to address any of the fans' concerns, noting that "we implore you to perform at our artist's future Continue to give love and support.”
Fans were quick to question the statement, with Twitter user "cruelrush" also raising environmental concerns about NFTs, while other fans threatened to boycott the K-pop icon:
"We are willing to actively support Sunmi, but not at the expense of the environment. NFTs are bad. We want to support her and interact with her by buying Sunmi's albums and songs. Go to her shows. We hope there will be more Online concert to support her," they wrote.
Just a bunch of lies, NFTs don't need to be used to further support an artist. Sunmi already has a lot of fans who really love her music and personality. No one asks or wants this, Abyss is just greedy

Although it's a sensitive topic in the gaming community, Valve CEO Gabe Newell praised NFTs and discussed the potential benefits of integrating the technology with AAA games.
His company owns digital game distribution giant Steam, and in an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, Newell was quick to draw the line between NFT technology and current users.
He noted that fundamental features such as distributed ledgers, digital ownership and shared space “are all very plausible” and should not be overlooked:
"You have to separate the underlying technology from the players who are using that technology. It's like if you're a chemist and you look at nitrocellulose and you think, 'Oh yeah, we can do it with it. Some really interesting stuff'."
"However, people in this space tend to get involved in a lot of criminal activity and sketchy behavior. So, it's more about the players than it is about the underlying technology or rationale for what we're doing," he added .
Thank you for your support, Newell, very much appreciated.
