OpenAI Acknowledges Outage

OpenAI has apologised to its 200 million active users following a global outage of ChatGPT, which occurred shortly after its integration into Apple's latest software update.

The outage coincided with the launch of ChatGPT's integration into Apple's Siri across iPhones, iPads, and Macs, though OpenAI has not confirmed a direct link between the two events.

During the disruption, users attempting to access ChatGPT's API encountered messages stating, "ChatGPT is currently unavailable" and "OpenAI has identified the issue and is working to roll out a fix.”

The outage also affected OpenAI's video generation model, Sora.

By 3:53 AM UTC on 12 December, OpenAI reported that traffic to ChatGPT and Sora had "largely recovered."

The outage was first reported at 11:07 PM UTC on 11 December, according to Downdetector data.

Within 30 minutes, reports peaked at over 1,500 before gradually subsiding.

This marks at least the fourth network failure for ChatGPT since June, following similar incidents in both June and August.

The disruption comes as OpenAI and Apple deepen their collaboration.

Apple''s Siri can now leverage ChatGPT through Apple Intelligence, enhancing its ability to respond to complex queries, including questions about photos and documents.

These new features also enable users to utilise ChatGPT's visual intelligence capabilities, offering insights into places and objects around them.

Currently, these integrated functionalities are available on iPhone 15 models and newer devices.
