Musk said artificial intelligence and robotics will infinitely promote economic development

Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, envisions a future where artificial intelligence and robotics drastically reduce the need for human labour. He shared this perspective during a panel discussion at the 2024 All-In Summit. Musk reiterated similar sentiments from the AI Safety Summit in England, highlighting the challenges humanity might face in finding purpose once AI surpasses human capabilities.

Musk questioned, "How do we find meaning in a world where AI can do everything we can do, but better?" This existential dilemma, according to him, may become a central issue in the future. He pointed out that tasks traditionally carried out by humans could increasingly be handled by robots, leading to a potential "crisis of meaning."

Artificial intelligence and humanoid robotics will fuel economic expansion indefinitely

The evolution of AI has rendered the Turing test, once a standard for measuring a machine's ability to mimic human conversation, largely obsolete. Musk emphasised that as more people retire and enjoy their lives, the concern shifts towards whether humans can find purpose in a world where AI excels at everything they once did.

He further discussed the potential economic impact of humanoid robots. "If you've got humanoid robots... there's no real limit to the economy," Musk noted. He suggested that the growth of AI-powered systems, particularly autonomous vehicles and humanoid robots, could drive economic expansion, potentially without bounds.

The Evolution of Tesla's Optimus Robot

Musk also spoke about Tesla's Optimus robot, revealing how its development has provided insights into the mechanics of the human body. He discussed the structure of the hand, highlighting the importance of its design for future robotic developments.

The current Optimus hand, which has 11 degrees of freedom, is a simplified version of the human hand, which has approximately 25 degrees of freedom. This limits the robot's capabilities. However, Tesla's next-generation hand will feature 22 degrees of freedom, powered by actuators placed in the forearm, much like the human arm, enabling a higher degree of functionality.

Musk predicts robots will outnumber humans

Musk predicts that humanoid robots will eventually outnumber humans. Competing with companies such as Figure AI, 1X, and Mercedes-Benz, Tesla is in a race to develop AI-powered robots for commercial and domestic use. Musk confidently stated, "Everyone wants a robot buddy," suggesting a future where robots could become common household companions.
