U.S. presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. spoke at a press conference for the Consensus 2024 conference in Austin, Texas on Thursday. Here are some of his comments:
Donald Trump’s Guilty Verdict
“I want to talk about issues of broader concern. I want to talk about economic issues and health issues. That’s what my campaign is about. I’m not going to get dragged into the mud. I don’t have any ideas. I’ve been very disciplined and not talked about the lawsuits against [Joe] Biden or Trump.”
On Trump’s Newly Supportive Crypto Stance
“I’m happy about it. I think it’s a good thing for our country. The commitment to crypto is a commitment to freedom and transparency. I’m not going to question whether it’s a political decision. I’m glad he did it, and I hope President Biden does the same.”
Biggest Issues Facing Crypto Regulation in the U.S.
“I think freedom of exchange is one of them. We need sovereignty over our wallets, freedom of exchange, and a transparent monetary system. We need to make sure that the United States remains the epicenter of blockchain technology. I will make sure that cryptocurrencies are regulated to protect consumers from fraud. I’ve bought 21 Bitcoins since I started this campaign. I also bought three for each of my children.”
What Does the Future Hold for Crypto Enthusiasts?
"If elected president, my goal would be to make cryptocurrency a transactional currency. People could have the freedom to trade it. People could choose whether or not to buy it. I think it should be treated as a currency; we shouldn't tax it as capital gains. I think there's a problem with how we do that. I believe it should be a currency that people can use to buy things like apples, lunch, and coffee, and people can do that."
What prompted Kennedy to run for president
"When I was young, I thought about going into politics. For 20 years, I hadn't thought about it. I saw what happened during the pandemic and what happened when the government shut down the economy. I thought it was wrong. The government closed every church, attacked the Fifth Amendment, closed businesses without due process... They shut down jury trials, violated injunctions, and I saw the attacks on the Constitution and censorship, not just by me but by so many people who were trying to speak. I saw all of this, and it was so immoral for my country. All of these traditional values of my party and my country were disappearing, and I felt like I had a unique role to play in showing people what America should be like."
