Frederick Kempe, CEO of the Atlantic Council, raised critical concerns regarding the deepening China-Russia alliance and the implications for US leadership during the recent UN General Assembly. Together with former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, he warned of rising global threats reminiscent of the Cold War era.
China-Russia partnership poses threat to global stability
Kempe highlighted the increasing partnership between China and Russia, asserting that it not only sustains Russia's military efforts in Ukraine but also empowers Iran and heightens tensions in Asia. He stressed the necessity for bold US leadership alongside global allies to address these escalating threats.
Condoleezza Rice characterised the current geopolitical landscape as more perilous than the Cold War, citing the intertwining global challenges of populism, nativism, isolationism, and protectionism.
US Ambassadors Call for Ongoing Sanctions
Kempe pointed out China's growing support for Russia's defence capabilities, which continues to enhance Moscow's military initiatives. Nicholas Burns, the US ambassador to China, confirmed ongoing sanctions against over 300 Chinese firms, emphasising the need for continued pressure on China to alter its behaviour in supporting Russia's military efforts.
The increasing collaboration between China and Russia poses serious challenges for global security, highlighting the urgent need for a robust and cohesive response from the US and its allies.
