KRU Returns with a Revolutionary AI Music Video
After a six-year hiatus, Malaysian music group KRU has made an exciting comeback with the release of their new single, Voodoo.
This release marks not only a significant step in their musical journey but also a pioneering moment in the local music industry.
The group has made history as the first Malaysian act to use artificial intelligence (AI) to create their digital twins for a music video.
AI and Music – A Bold New Frontier
KRU's venture into AI technology represents more than just an innovative move; it’s a bold statement about embracing the future of music production.
In an announcement, the group shared their excitement about Voodoo’s release, stating,
“Voodoo holds a special place in our hearts, not only as our first new release after a six-year hiatus, but also as a milestone for the local music industry. By incorporating AI technology into our music video production, we are taking a bold step forward.”
The group expressed their hope that Voodoo would resonate with today’s music fans, inviting them to reconnect at the Kaset concert in 2025.
A Journey Through Time and Technology
The music video for Voodoo takes viewers on a supernatural journey, blending nostalgia with cutting-edge technology.
Set as a “prequel” to KRU’s rise to fame, the video revisits the early 1990s, before the band’s debut album Canggih was released in 1992.
It features a fictional storyline in which the band members are brought to life as AI-generated versions of themselves, manufactured in a secret lab by a deranged female scientist.
The concept draws inspiration from the eerie, suspenseful novels of Stephen King, particularly in how the band’s youthful AI counterparts, resembling “Frankenstein monster teen idols,” awaken with extraordinary talents in singing and dancing.
Voodoo: A Revival of KRU’s Signature Sound
While the video is groundbreaking in its use of AI, the song Voodoo itself is a testament to KRU’s evolution as artists.
The track, which mixes pop dance, hip-hop, and R&B, showcases the Abdul Halim brothers' growth over the years, with more mature vocal performances, exceptional songwriting, and polished production.
The song narrates the complicated emotions of a man entranced by an alluring woman whose charm feels almost otherworldly.
KRU’s Comeback Album – Kaset and What’s Next
Formed in 1992, KRU originally disbanded in 2018, leaving behind a legacy of unforgettable hits.
Their comeback was announced in October 2024, with their new album Kaset, featuring 10 tracks.
Along with the album, the group has also planned a series of concerts for 2025, adding another layer to their return to the spotlight.
Released on 22 November 2024, Voodoo signals a return to KRU's golden era, reviving memories of their signature sound while offering something fresh for long-time fans and newcomers alike.
