Google and Magic Leap may work together to develop metaverse goggles

Mixed reality startup Magic Leap has announced a "multi-faceted strategic technology partnership" with Google to develop new extended reality technologies. According to a statement from Magic Leap CTO Julie Larson-Green, the partnership will highlight Magic Leap's advances in optics and Google's infrastructure. "By combining our rich optical capabilities with Google's technology, this partnership accelerates the transformative power of augmented reality to continue to deliver immersive experiences for the developer ecosystem and customers. We look forward to expanding the potential of extended reality to blend the physical world with valuable, contextual solutions." The press release did not describe any actual products or announce any potential services, but this could mean a new headset for AR/XR to compete with Meta and Apple. As The Verge's Sean Hollister pointed out in a recent article, it's unclear what Google gets out of this partnership. Google has demonstrated its ability to create custom hardware across its product line, from Pixel smartphones to its well-received smart speakers.
