Netflix Faces Backlash Over AI-Generated Images in New Show Promotion
Netflix has come under fire once again for using AI to create promotional images for one of its shows.
Following previous controversies surrounding AI-generated content, this latest incident involves a thumbnail for the Korean cooking show “Please Take Care of My Refrigerator”.
AI-Generated Image Sparks Online Debate
The image in question, promoting the new season of “Please Take Care of My Refrigerator”, shows a chef standing in front of a fridge.
Upon closer inspection, online viewers quickly pointed out several glaring flaws that raised questions about the authenticity of the image.
The fridge in the image features handles placed on the inside of the doors, which would make it impossible to close the fridge.
The wall tiles also appear distorted, and some of the objects, like the plates and bananas, seem out of place or unnaturally altered.
Why Are Viewers Concerned?
The use of AI in creating this image has sparked a renewed conversation about the ethics of using AI for marketing purposes.
While AI-generated content has been a growing trend, many viewers have begun to notice the unrealistic details and errors that typically accompany such images.
Some have criticised the use of AI in place of real photography or illustration, arguing that it detracts from the effort of human artists.
Riot Games Calls Out Netflix for AI Use in Arcane Promotion
This isn't the first time Netflix has faced criticism over AI-generated content.
Back in November 2024, Netflix removed an AI-created poster for the animated series Arcane, set in the world of Riot Games' League of Legends.
After viewers noticed that Netflix had extended the image using generative AI, Riot Games' brand lead condemned the move, calling it "disrespectful to the incredible artists who worked on the show."
AI's Growing Role in Show Promotions
The controversy surrounding AI use in promotional materials for Netflix’s content highlights a larger issue within the entertainment industry, which is the growing role of AI in creative fields.
As companies continue to experiment with AI to reduce costs and speed up production, questions over intellectual property rights and the value of human artistry are becoming more pressing.
With the new season of “Please Take Care of My Refrigerator” set to premiere on 12 January 2025, it is uncertain whether Netflix will address these concerns or continue using AI-generated content for future promotions.
