OpenAI Expands Access to Canva for All ChatGPT Users
OpenAI has announced that its collaborative editing tool, Canvas, is now available to all ChatGPT users, including those on the free tier.
Previously, Canvas was limited to paying users, such as ChatGPT Plus, Teams, Edu, and Enterprise subscribers.
This expansion, part of OpenAI’s ongoing "12 Days of OpenAI" campaign, brings significant new features to the web and Windows app users, with a MacOS release planned soon.
Streamlined Workflow with Real-Time Edits and Suggestions
Canvas offers a dynamic workspace where users collaborate with ChatGPT, receiving real-time edits and suggestions.
Unlike the traditional ChatGPT interface, which generates new responses, Canvas allows changes to be made directly within the project.
Users can request specific edits—such as altering text length or adjusting readability—and the changes will appear instantly in the right panel, keeping the left panel for conversation history.
This creates a more fluid, efficient editing process, whether for writing or coding tasks.
Integration with GPT-4o for Seamless Experience
One of the standout updates is Canvas’s full integration with GPT-4o.
From now on, users won’t need to toggle between models; Canvas will automatically launch for certain prompts or pasted text, providing a smoother and more intuitive experience.
This update is available to all users through the web and Windows versions, while MacOS support is on the horizon.
New Functionality: Running and Debugging Python Code
Another exciting feature of Canvas is its ability to execute Python code directly within the workspace.
Users can now run their code and see the results immediately, eliminating the need to test code on external platforms.
Additionally, Canvas will identify errors and provide suggestions to fix them based on the console output.
This brings Canvas in line with competing tools like Anthropic’s Claude Artifacts, which offer similar capabilities.
In a live demonstration, OpenAI showcased how Canvas could generate and preview graphics directly from code, enabling real-time adjustments before finalising visual outputs.
Custom GPTs Get Canvas Integration
Canvas has been integrated into newly created custom GPTs by default, allowing users to control when it activates within their customised assistants.
For existing custom GPTs, users can manually add Canvas through the settings.
This flexibility enables businesses and developers to enhance their custom GPTs, adding the powerful features of Canvas to suit their unique needs.
Improved Text and Code Handling
In addition to the main features, OpenAI has also improved the Canvas interface for text and code imports.
Users can now copy and paste content more easily, while the system ensures that updates, such as bug fixes and code revisions, are instantly reflected in the workspace.
These enhancements contribute to a more efficient workflow for users working on complex projects.
“12 Days of OpenAI” Brings Daily Announcements
Canvas’s wider rollout is part of OpenAI’s “12 Days of OpenAI” event, where daily announcements and live demos showcase new features and tools.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, teased the event on X, saying,
“🎄🎅 starting tomorrow at 10 am pacific, we are doing 12 days of openai... we’ve got some great stuff to share, hope you enjoy! merry christmas.”
So far, the event has introduced several exciting features, including the Sora video model, which allows users to generate videos using text or video inputs.
ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers can create up to 50 videos per month in 480p resolution, with higher limits for Pro users.
Other highlights include the introduction of the ChatGPT Pro subscription plan and the expanded availability of the Reinforcement Fine-Tuning Research Program, which allows developers to fine-tune OpenAI models for specific tasks.
With these updates, OpenAI is continuing to strengthen its position in the AI space, offering powerful tools like Canvas that enhance user productivity across all platforms.
