Two Estonian citizens have been indicted in Tallinn, Estonia, on 18 counts of wire fraud, money laundering, and other charges for their alleged involvement in a $575 million cryptocurrency fraud and money laundering conspiracy, according to a release from the U.S. Department of Justice. According to court documents, Sergei Potapenko and Ivan Turõgin allegedly defrauded hundreds of thousands of victims through a multifaceted scheme that lured victims into signing fraudulent equipment leases with a cryptocurrency mining service called HashFlare and invested in a company called A virtual currency bank for Polybius Bank. According to statistics, the victims paid more than $575 million to the companies of Potapenko and Turõgin, who then used shell companies to launder the proceeds of the fraud and buy real estate and luxury cars. If convicted, both face up to 20 years in prison each. The FBI is currently investigating the case.
