Iconic American restaurant chain McDonald's appears to be preparing to venture into the metaverse, registering 10 virtual space trademarks.
Josh Gerben, trademark attorney and founder of Gerben Intellectual Property, tweeted today that McDonald’s filed a trademark application on February 4 that includes “a virtual restaurant featuring real and virtual goods” and “operating a A virtual restaurant featuring home delivery” plan.
Based on the application, the restaurant chain will be able to offer “downloadable multimedia files” for artwork, audio and video files, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
McDonald's also included its McCafe brand in the Metaverse trademark application. The brand will prepare to offer entertainment, "that is, live and virtual concerts and other virtual events available online." Could McCafe be the new brand's virtual destination for you to see a sponsored concert by one of your favorite shows?
McDonald's will compete with other emerging virtual concert organizers, such as Animal Concerts. Such concerts remove geographic barriers, allow fans to see their favorite shows, and greatly reduce the cost of touring.
McDonald's has joined bakery and coffee chain Panera Bread in an effort to transfer its brand to the Metaverse. On February 3, Panera Bread filed a similar trademark application for a virtual restaurant and coffee chain called PANERAVERSE.
Its plans also include downloadable content and NFTs, virtual food and drink, and virtual amenities where users can gather.
"I think within the next 12 months, you're going to see every brand you can think of submit these applications," Gerben said in an interview with Forbes on February 9.
The average time it takes for the USPTO to review a trademark application is about nine and a half months, but Gerben believes that neither McDonald's nor Panera Bread will have any trouble getting their trademarks approved.
