Efficiency Boost for Layer 2 Rollups in Sight
In a recent biweekly meeting, Ethereum developers announced a significant upgrade named Dencun, set to enhance the blockchain's scalability. This upgrade is now scheduled for 2024, pushed from its original Q4 2023 timeline.
Adhering to Schedule Despite Potential Delays
Tim Beiko, a leading figure at the Ethereum Foundation, highlighted the contingency of delaying the upgrade if major issues arise. The Goerli test network is poised to experience the Dencun upgrade on 17th January, subject to stability.
Global Testing Efforts and Impressive Network Performance
The Goerli Shadow Fork, a precursor to the upgrade, involved 300 nodes across continents, including North America, Europe, India, and Australia. It concluded with a high success rate, showcasing a 99% participation rate among nodes.
Technical Enhancements and Network Stability
A novel network spamming exercise was conducted, focusing on 'blobs'. The exercise aimed to average 4 blobs per block, but stabilized around 3. This addition increased network bandwidth from 700 to 900 kbps.
Rapid Blob Propagation Achieved
Blobs propagated swiftly, with 95% taking under 2 seconds and an average time below 500 milliseconds.
ETH's Market Response and Network Activity
This development has positively impacted Ethereum's market presence. At the time of reporting, ETH traded at $2,315.75, marking a 4.15% growth in 24 hours. The Ethereum network also showed robust activity, indicated by consistent gas usage and a surge in NFT trades.
Ethereum Faces the Future with Cautious Optimism Despite these advancements, Ethereum's journey towards its upgrade remains a delicate balance of innovation and risk management.
