Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat's Vision for AI and Deep Tech at SWITCH 2023
Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat shared insights on AI's transformative potential at the Singapore Week of Innovation and Technology (SWITCH) 2023. Mr Heng highlighted AI's profound impact, stressing that it's a key element of deep technology (deep tech) that is reshaping the world.
AI's Impact on Global Challenges
In his speech, Mr Heng linked AI's potential to addressing global challenges. He cited AI's role in developing COVID-19 vaccines through mRNA research and its capacity to revolutionise data processing. Mr Heng also mentioned OpenAI's ChatGPT4 and the anticipation surrounding ChatGPT-5, demonstrating AI's continuous evolution.
Challenges and Building an AI Ecosystem
While recognising AI's promise, Mr Heng acknowledged the challenges it poses, echoing the 'tough tech' terminology used by MIT. Deep tech, including AI, demands extensive research, significant investments, and market acceptance.
To address these challenges, Singapore is focused on nurturing an AI ecosystem. This includes partnerships between start-ups, corporations, venture capital, and government agencies. These collaborations occur on three levels: locally in Singapore, regionally within Asia, and globally.
AI Safety and Governance
Mr Heng also emphasised the need for responsible AI use. Singapore is taking steps to enhance AI safety and governance by creating initiatives like the AI Verify Foundation and a Generative AI Evaluation Sandbox. These measures involve global players and experts, contributing to responsible AI practices.
Global AI Connectivity
Singapore's vision extends to global AI connectivity. By fostering international connections, Singapore aims to attract talent, capital, and global impact. Expanding the Global Innovation Alliance by establishing nodes in Mumbai, Sydney, and Melbourne, Singapore seeks to provide tech start-ups with access to international markets and business partners.
Singapore’s Future in AI
Anticipating Singapore's future in AI holds great promise. The nation's dedication to global AI connectivity, exemplified by the expansion of the Global Innovation Alliance, is a noteworthy development. It not only reaffirms Singapore's leadership in AI innovation but also underscores its role in promoting international collaboration and fostering innovation.
